When I am working with my clients, especially when they want a website, my first question to them is who their target audience is.

When it comes to marketing and advertising your business, it is imperative that you know who your target audience is and how to reach them. It is more beneficial to reach as many people as possible. To directly reach that specific group of the population, you need to be very focused to decide what your message is and how you will deliver it.

How to Define Your Target Audience

A target audience is defined as the specific group of people who would mostly likely be interested in your product or service. Demographics such as age, gender, location, education level, marital status, ethnical background, occupation and type of job or work (e.g. business owner, or employee or management or executive chairperson), income level, lifestyle, values, attitudes, behaviour, personality, and interests are factors to consider.

What Matters about Focusing on Your Target Audience

To sell your product or service, you have to understand how it relates to the needs of your target audience. What are the benefits of using the product or service? Does the product or service solve a problem for your target audience? Briefly highlighting benefits or solution to a problem will connect your audience and establish trust.

How to Find Your Target Audience

The first place to start is by thinking about the specific needs of your target audience that your product or service satisfies. If you want to reach a very specific group of the population you may want to provide a special offer or purchase code when people visit your website and a survey to sift out the information you need. For example, if your business specializes in designing websites, you would focus on business owners and entrepreneurs as your target market.

Research Your Competition

Research your competitors to see what products or services they offer and how they are promoting them. Go the extra mile to provide better customer service than your competitors.

Analysing and Measuring the Effectiveness of Your Message

Monitoring how effective your message is in advertising is one of the most important tasks in promoting your products or services. Tracking your sales, the number of new customers and the number of inquiries, website traffic, leads and conversions, and click-throughs all indicate how successful your message is in reaching your audience.

Market, Educate and Blogging

Your success or failure hinges on making the connection with exactly the right customer or client. With this in mind, marketing is the most important task especially for niche businesses. If your business is focus on specialized products such as nutrition supplements and dieting or your business is specialized in providing an office cleaning service, it is important to make an effort to educate your clientele on your products or service.

Once you have customers, contact them on a regular basis by sending out a monthly newsletter or special offers on products.

Posting blogs on a blog page on your website is also very beneficial, giving you the opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise, and promote new products and services.

Engage in Social Media

There are also several different social media where you can research the interests of your audience, reach out to your audience, start conversations that your audience is interested in, and post blogs and articles. Research on social media to keep up with the interests of your audience and new trends. Include social media buttons on your website that connect your audience to your profiles.

Maintain the Search Engine Optimisation of your Website

It is important that to keep your website appearing high in search engine results on Google, Bing and other search engines to be seen by potential customers. You can do this by regularly adding new content, new keywords relevant to your business products and services, creating links back to your website and sharing content on social media.
